Connecting a custom domain
Pro users can connect their own domain (e.g., johnsmith.com) to their portfolio instead of using the default yourname.resumebuilder.com link. Here's the full setup process.
Prerequisites
- An active Pro subscription
- A registered domain name (from any registrar — GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains, etc.)
- Access to your domain's DNS settings
Step-by-step setup
Go to Settings → Portfolio → Custom Domain
Find this in your account settings sidebar.
Enter your domain
Type the domain you want to use (e.g., johnsmith.com or portfolio.johnsmith.com).
Add the DNS record
We'll show you a CNAME record to add to your domain's DNS. It looks like: CNAME @ cname.resumebuilder.com. Log into your registrar, find DNS settings, and add this record.
Wait for propagation
DNS changes take 5 minutes to 48 hours to take effect. Most domains propagate within 15 minutes.
Verify and enable
Once propagated, click "Verify" in your settings. If successful, your domain will be active immediately.
Tip: We automatically provision an SSL certificate for your custom domain, so it loads with HTTPS — no extra configuration needed.
Subdomain vs. root domain
- Subdomain (portfolio.yourdomain.com): Use a CNAME record — easy to set up, doesn't affect your main website
- Root domain (yourdomain.com): Requires changing your domain's A record — only do this if you don't have a separate website on this domain
Note: If you already have a website on your root domain, do NOT change the A record. Use a subdomain instead to avoid taking down your existing site.
Troubleshooting
- Verification fails → DNS hasn't propagated yet. Wait and retry. Use dig or DNS checker tools to confirm.
- Shows "Connection not secure" → SSL cert is still being issued. Wait 10–15 minutes after verification.
- Works in one browser but not another → DNS cache. Clear DNS cache or try in incognito.
